June 7, 2018, Maggie Flynn, Skilled Nursing News - Ensign Group Acquires Arizona SNF - The Ensign Group (Nasdaq: ENSG) acquired the operations of Sun West Choice Healthcare and Rehabilitation, a 140-bed skilled nursing facility in Sun City West, Ariz.
The Mission Viejo, Calif.-based provider has a long-term lease on the facility, which was effective June 1, and the deal brings the number of skilled nursing facilities in Ensign’s operating portfolio to 184.
“Sun West Choice is a perfect example of an off-market acquisition resulting from relationships built by our local operators over many years,” Ensign president and CEO Christopher Christensen said in a press release announcing the deal. “While we continue to evaluate many potential acquisition opportunities with extreme care and thought, this operation stood out as one that shows significant long-term potential while adding strength to our growing footprint in Arizona.”
The renovation began immediately after Marquis, the health care affiliate of Tryko Partners, LLC, acquired the facility in 2016.
The renovations included a complete overhaul of the long-term care (LTC) floor, with updates of patient rooms and common areas. Marquis also built out dedicated sub-acute rehab suites and a new therapy gym.
The facility provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab, and long-term residential care; the renovation also brought new specialty cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs, among other services.

The Green House Homes facility, located on the campus of the Mirasol Senior Living Community, gives LTC residents a private bathroom and bedroom, along with common living room, kitchen, and open dining room. The three buildings will each house 10 residents and are expected to cost about $9 million to build.
The six original Green House Homes in the community currently house 60 people.
